Year 8 Geography
Year 8 students from the Dinas Powys and Penarth sites have just finished learning about the rainforest in Geography. As part of this topic we learnt about ways people can help protect the rainforest. One way is to sponsor a section of rainforest to ensure it is protected into the future.Year 8 pupils from both sites decided they wanted to help. Pupilseither made a donation or carried out fundraising activities such as a sponsored silence, swim or run. A total of £110 was raised which has enabled the School to sponsor 1.5 acres (about 1.5 football pitches) of rainforest. Our donation to the World Land Trust has turned threated wildlife habitats into nature reserves. Our donation will be used to permanently protect habitat in Ecuador, Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico.
Thanks to everyone for their help.(24/01/2012)

Art Competitions
The Autumn Term is a busy time for budding artists as there are several competitions that they can enter in an attempt to have their work recognised by the school and the local community.
Race Equality First is a Cardiff based charity organisation that run an annual competition for school children to design the pages of their calendar and St Cyres School pupils have had an excellent success rate over the last ten years. The title of the competition was Equality: One World and many pupils used inspiration from The 2012 Olympics in their design. They championed the concept that sport is open to all ages, abilities and cultures and that it is very much about teamwork. Twenty-five entries were shortlisted from years seven and eight and a few examples of the high standard of work can be seen here. Karys Hudson, 8DCD has been selected as one of this year’s winners and she will receive £50 in vouchers and see her design reproduced on the calendar throughout Cardiff and The Vale.
The winner of the School Christmas Card competition has also been announced and the prize will be awarded to Matthew Wright 8LSK during a Christmas assembly. He receives a £10 voucher, a selection of art equipment and a pack of his very own cards printed with the winning design. Matthew’s card design featured a snowy scene that must have taken several hours to complete due to the amount of detail. The Art Department would like to say, well done to all those pupils who submitted an entry to one or more competitions this term and please keep up the good work in the Spring.(24/10/2011)

Studio 6 Opening
This month saw the opening of a brand new facility for St. Cyres sixth formers. In addition to the sixth form study centre, our senior students can now choose to work in our new Stiwdio 6, where they can work and discuss the latest issues over hot chocolate, panini's and a whole range of hot and cold drinks and snacks. In addition, students can catch up with the latest news and trends on our newly installed flat screen TV. The sixth form would like to thank the site team who worked tirelessly over the summer holidays to transform the old common room into the state-of–the-art facility they now enjoy. Head Girl Lauren commented “On behalf of all the sixth form students of St. Cyres, we would just like to say a big thank you for everyone who made this happen, we are very grateful”.(18/10/2011)

Pupils will be visiting the following sites: Sanctuary Wood, John McCrae site, Hill 62, Essex Farm, Langemark, Tyne Cot Cemetery, Hooge Crater Museum, Somme, Vimy Ridge and Arras. We would like to encourage pupils to undertake some research about these sites before the visit so they can appreciate the full significance of each one. EU Mock Council
Our head boy and girl, Elias and Lauren, were EU delegates acting as St Cyres’ representatives at the annual EU Mock Council. They were assigned a key member state for the discussions and held their own during a lively debate. Elias and Lauren were asked to consider issues from Greece’s point of view. Held at Ty Hywel, the former home of the Welsh Assembly, ‘Greece’ were asked to provide their viewpoints on two contentious issues which have divided the European Union – the Common Agricultural Policy and the Euro zone. Both Elias and Lauren successfully argued their points and were even able to convince other member states that Greece’s plight was an issue worth tackling. The event was recorded for television and received national attention. Education Minister Leighton Andrews introduced the meeting and talks went well on into the afternoon. Both issues were resolved by a majority vote and most member states left content with the decisions made. Perhaps the real EU should take note.(04/10/2011)

The Macmilan Charity's Annual Biggest Coffee Morning in the World
The Macmillan charity's annual Biggest Coffee Morning in the World took place in the school on one of the hottest Mondays of the year - in October! The Sixth form students took responsibility for organising the sale of hot tea, coffee and drinking chocolate while the Fairtrade Committee offered Fairtrade products during both lunch times. Even though many of the pupils chose to remain in the sun a total of almost £100 was raised for Macmillan while the Fairtrade stall ran out of many products and leaflets. The photo shows most of the pupils who helped on the day. (04/10/2011)
