The Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma is an over-arching formal qualification which recognises everything our students achieve during their time in Years 12 and 13. Successful students gain 120 UCAS points (equivalent to an A grade at A Level) for the Advanced Diploma. It is a compulsory element of our post-16 delivery because of the value it gives our students.

The Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification is now widely recognised by Higher Education institutions. In the last two years our students have had such offers from Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Nottingham, Reading, Southampton, York, Swansea, Glamorgan, Newport, UWIC, Cardiff and many others, all of whom recognise the quality of the Welsh Baccalaureate provision at St. Cyres.

The Welsh Baccalaureate allows the students to progress further with their existing essential skills qualifications, work effectively in the community, develop e-business skills and undertake research for the Extended Project providing an excellent training ground for future university work.

The Importance of Essential Skills

Students will acquire Essential Skills in their subject areas. In addition, we have designed an Essential Skills support programme that will help all our students to gain Essential Skills qualifications. This is delivered through Welsh Baccalaureate lessons and special Sixth Form conferences.

The students’ existing Essential Skills portfolio will be further developed with opportunities to advance to Level 3 qualifications in a number of these areas
