This weeks sporting news:

Year 9 Football vs West Cardiff High School (Match report by Jacob Brown & Lucas Follon) – Won 12-1.

At 2:30 pm on Thursday 14 September the match between St Cyres and West Cardiff High school kicked off. During the first half St Cyres were mostly on top with Mohamed Nasir scoring 2 goals within the first 20 minutes, and scoring another to complete his hat trick with 5 minutes of the first half to go. Also in the first half, Ioan Rogers scored a goal from the left side just inside the box. Making his debut, Elliot James showed a strong performance causing the opposition’s centre back to score an own goal. At half time Mr Courtney-Pinn gave a great team talk.

At around 3:05 pm the whistle blew and the second half was underway. Haseeb Kahn opened the scoring despite being under pressure, his shot managing to find its way into the bottom left corner. William Limbrick scored next with a cracking shot from outside the box and Elliot James, with a cross from the right hand side, led the same defender to score his second own goal! Next, West Cardiff High made a break through the St Cyres defence which left Scott O’Rourke (St Cyres goalkeeper) on his own. Scott got his fingers to the ball but deflected it into the top left corner. That made the score 8-1. Ethan Gardner made a great pass to Haseeb who then laid the ball back to Ethan for him to take a cracking shot at their goal and score. Ioan, making his second appearance, scored another amazing goal. Coming on late in the game the captain Finley Hayman, playing at centre back, made two great runs through the West Cardiff’s’ defence and scored two fabulous goal making the score 12-1.

Shortly after, the final whistle blew meaning St Cyres boys now advance through to the next stage in the school football cup. This surely showed the greatest performance yet. The man of the match decided by all the boys was… debut player Zac Akande with a great defensive performance. From the game came an area to improve on. The corner taking will be strongly improved on in future training sessions. However there were many positive areas to take in as well. Number one is the great passing between the team and making through balls to the strikers. The second point is strong defensive play and excellent tackle.

Girls South Wales Tennis Finals 2016

On Friday 9 September the Senior Girls’ tennis team travelled to The David Lloyd Centre in Cardiff to contest the South Wales Schools’ Championships.

The competition format was two groups of three teams playing a ‘round-robin’ of matches with the winning teams from each group contesting the final.

In the first round, the St Cyres players were unable to clinch winning points in four closely contested matches, three singles and one doubles against Cardiff High School.

In the second group match, against Ysgol Cwmtawe, Swansea, Sophie T and Amelia D were able to win their singles and doubles matches with Caitlin H running her singles opponent close in her singles match. A hand injury to Rebecca meant that she was unable to compete.

Cardiff High progressed to the grand final and the St Cyres players took on Haberdashers’, Monmouth in a friendly fixture.

That match finished evenly with Sophie T and Amelia D finding their opponents too strong at singles but working together brilliantly to beat the same two girls in doubles.

Congratulations to the squad for reaching the South Wales Tennis Final.
