Today marks the end of what has been a very busy term and, as the pupils left with great excitement this afternoon, we reflect on what has been achieved.  In particular, I have spoken to many Year 7 pupils in the dining room this week about their first term at St Cyres and it was lovely to hear how well they have settled in and feel very much part of the St Cyres community.

It has also been a busy week as we have been able to bring back some of our traditional Christmas celebrations after a gap caused by Covid.  Our Christmas assembly for Year 7 and Year 8 was a great opportunity to focus on how Christmas is celebrated around the world and was led by Miss Jones (Head of Year 7) and Mr Flynn (Head of Year 8).  Both were in fine voice on the microphone as they led the singing!  There were also some amazing soloist and group musical items which were enjoyed by all.

Another great Christmas tradition of ours has been the German Christmas Market and Mrs Owens (Head of International Languages) put on a spectacular event to raise money for the very important charity Latch.  As well as the Christmas Market, Mrs Owens also spoke to children in our assemblies this week about the important charity work that Latch do, and how they have supported a number of our pupils and their families.  We are delighted to support this charity and delighted that we have raised over £1100 through the efforts of our pupils and staff.  With the help of our Head Girl, Head Boy and their deputies, one of our Year 10 pupils has been working on another charity event to raise money for Latch so more information will follow on that in the new year.

My final thought as we end the term, and as we end 2022, is to say a very special thank you to our parents for your continued support.  I have had lots of messages from many of you, both in writing and when we have had an opportunity to meet at the various school events and I always enjoy catching up with you and sharing ideas.  There will be further opportunities to meet in the new year with ‘Matilda – The Musical’ and the forthcoming parents’ evenings so please do not hesitate to catch up with me and I look forward to chatting with you.

I wish you all a very happy Christmas and new year.

It is not only in Qatar where the football drama is unfolding, but also here in St Cyres School on our own 3G pitch where our Year 10 boys played against Ysgol Plasmawr in the Welsh Cup.  Despite the very cold weather on Tuesday afternoon, it was nice to see so many pupils and parents supporting the efforts of our boys.  It was a closely contested match, but unfortunately after ending in a draw, our boys lost on penalties.  We wish Ysgol Plasmawr the very best in their journey in the cup.

In a previous blog post, I referred to our school production ‘Matilda The Musical’ which is on over 2 nights on 1st and 2nd February 2023.  Tickets are now almost fully sold out, but if you would like to attend, there are literally a handful of tickets available which can be purchased via this school website by clicking on the blue banner at the top of the home page.

As we approach the last 2 weeks of term, one of the highlights is seeing the many UCAS offers that our Year 13 students are getting as they look forward to their journey after they leave St Cyres School.  This week in particular, we have seen lots of university offers coming through.  This is a very exciting time for them and, for us as teachers, seeing the range and variety of courses that our students are choosing to pursue leaves us with a sense of satisfaction that we have created curious and inquisitive young people who are keen to develop and learn more through exciting university programmes.

For those students who have yet to finalise their UCAS applications, remember that there is a lot of support from Miss Jones and your Learning Coaches.  The final deadline for UCAS for the majority of courses is 25th January 2023, but please do not leave this until the last minute!  For those looking at alternatives such as apprenticeships and work-based training, there is a lot of support for you too, so please be sure discuss your options with Miss Jones.

If you follow St Cyres School on Twitter, you will know that we have been on a ‘Matilda’ roadshow this week with lots of our pupils visiting our feeder primary schools to showcase preparations for our main school production which is in February next year.  The pupils performed extracts from the show and this was well received by the pupils in Year 6 in the primary schools and there was a great response.  Our pupils certainly enjoyed the experience and look forward to the full production next February.  More details about how you can purchase tickets for ‘Matilda’ will follow nearer the time.

One of the things I love about St Cyres is where pupils suggest ideas about charities to support through our fundraising activities.  It is wonderful to listen to the pupils and their experiences, and to find ways of supporting their chosen charities.  This week, I was delighted to link up our Head Girl, Head Boy and their deputies with a pupil in Year 10 who is keen to support the charity Latch, and to start planning something for the new year.  Latch is also a charity we regularly support through our German Christmas market which will be in the last week of term.

I was delighted to see so many Year 10 parents and pupils in our information evening this week, and this built upon a very successful Year 10 parents’ meeting the week before.  We know that the way to get the best out of the young people in our school is with the school, parents and the pupil to all working together and it was evident that there is very strong home support.  I hope that you found the contributions from the subject specialists useful in informing you what is ahead, as well as the presentation by Miss Jones our Head of 6th Form about our school’s post-16 provision.

One of the highlights of the week for many of our pupils was the opportunity to come together in the Main Hall and in classrooms to support Wales v Iran in the World Cup finals.  Although it was not the result that Cymru supporters would have wanted, it was nonetheless a great opportunity to bring the school together and share in this experience!

There are some key moments that we reflect on when we look back at the impact of the pandemic, and this week was one of those moments.  This is because we had our first face-to-face parents’ meeting for Year 10 pupils since they joined the school in Year 7!  It is still hard to believe that these parents have not had an opportunity to meet their child’s teachers in person in all that time.  What was especially pleasing, however, is the high level of attendance and participation from parents and it was lovely to meet many of you during the evening.

As is our tradition, the school supported Children in Need on Friday by having a non-uniform day and we raised £750 towards this important charity.  Well done to all involved!
